New and Free

We want to reposition ourselves from our current limitations to the greater possibilities but in order to do that, we have to change our mind. While changing our minds can be as simple as deciding something different, the need for deeper change often precipitates the ability to go from here to there.

Our mind and our emotions are not disconnected. In fact, things that we have experienced which produce an emotional response inform our mind. From those experiences, we can form beliefs, vows or self-protection to avoid pain that is associated with a particular event. We likely won’t change our minds where our emotions are informing our minds that it is safer this way and not to go there.

The problem is that we progressively compartmentalize our hearts and retain sovereignty over our destiny. For followers of Jesus, that’s a problem in so much as it makes us god of those areas that He is willing and able to be God. For everything we are god at and He is excluded from, we are limited in the outcome. We aren’t intended to be god and He is better at it than we are.

So to change our minds, we often have to explore the emotions that inform our minds. In order to explore the emotions that inform our minds, we have to go to places that aren’t necessarily easy or comfortable. When we go to the places of hurt, we are able to determine the internal messaging we have been championing to self-protect. At that point, we can decide if we want to step off of God’s throne in that area and allow Him to be Him for us there.

Romans 12:2 (NLT) says:  “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

We are to be “transformed by the renewing of our minds.” We need new information for the transformation that is available. We need the Truth of God’s Word to know the lies that we have been told or have been telling ourselves. From the revelation of the emotions that lead to mistaken thinking, we can obtain healing for the hurt from the One that is the Healer. At the same time, we can replace the lies with His truth and be renewed as well as free.
